UPDATE: Commercial Vehicle Safety Blitz

A majority of the commercial vehicles checked in a safety blitz in Sarnia last week had not had their annual inspections.

Over 20, ranging from pickup trucks hauling trailers to full sized rigs, were inspected September 21.

Ministry of Transportation Highway Carrier Safety Inspector Kevin Kirkham says a total of 31 charges were laid.

"The majority of the infractions were due to annual inspections," says Kirkham. "Our officers were out there educating and informing drivers. Quite often, the drivers are unaware of their requirements for annual inspections. There are regulations and requirements under the Highway Traffic Act."

17 of 22 vehicles were taken out of service.

Kirkham says typically they're taken off the road until mechanical defects are repaired and re-inspection takes place.

Seven vehicle licence plates were seized during the day-long blitz because of major mechanical issues and no annual inspections.
