CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – The Department of Labor and Training is warning clients who use the online job board, EmployRI, to watch out for a fake recruiter scheme.

The DLT says the schemers, posing as representatives of a legitimate company, tried to defraud a job hunter by getting him to cash a check for $3,000.

He did not deposit the check and none of his confidential information was compromised.

On July 25, he reported the incident to DLT, which immediately deactivated the EmployRI account belonging to Cardinal Health Inc., a Fortune 500 health care services company based in Dublin, OH.

The DLT then called more than 400 job hunters whose résumés had been viewed by the Cardinal Health account to warn them.

At least 35 of those people say they were contacted about a job, including another customer who received but did not cash a $3,000 check.

The scheme has been reported to the Rhode Island State Police.

As a precaution, the DLT is offering free credit monitoring services for one year to all affected customers.

The agency says if you are on the job hunt:

  • Never respond to emails from unknown senders.
  • Be cautious of employers offering jobs without an interview.
  • And beware of employers who ask for money up front for instructions or products.
