Warren Buffett Shuffles Holdings in Q3

Precision Castparts an influencing factor in Buffett's 3rd quarter trades

Warren Buffett reported his 13F filing for the third quarter on Nov. 16. His purchase of Precision Castparts (PCP, Financial) in the third quarter was highly influential in his trading activity. According to CNBC, profits from the sale of Walmart (WMT, Financial) and Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) during the quarter were primarily directed towards funding his investment in Precision Castparts. In comments regarding the 13F filing, Buffett reported that his sale of both stocks during the quarter was not a direct reflection of either stock’s value.

During the third quarter other notable large capitalization stock trades included the following:

AT&T (T, Financial): In the third quarter Buffett added AT&T as a new holding to his portfolio, buying 59.3 million shares for a total value of approximately $1.9 billion. The new holding now represents approximately 1.5% of Warren Buffett’s total portfolio and Buffett holds 1% of the company’s outstanding shares.

General Motors (GM, Financial): Buffett increased his share position in General Motors by 9 million shares in the third quarter. The increase brings his total portfolio position in GM to 1.18% and his company ownership to 3.21%. The stock for General Motors has been trending up over the last month with GM gaining 4.52% at $34.60.

Phillips 66 (PSX, Financial): In the third quarter Buffett also actively traded Phillips 66. In August he bought 23.8 million shares and in September he bought 3.5 million shares. His share buys in the third quarter brought his total portfolio holdings to 61.5 million shares. At 61.5 million shares, Buffett owns 11.44% of the outstanding stock.

Kraft Heinz (KHC, Financial): In the third quarter Buffett’s Kraft Heinz investment was also highly significant. During the quarter he bought 325.4 million shares of Kraft Heinz. His investment in the newly merged consumer goods company helped increase Berkshire Hathaway’s (BRK.A, Financial)(BRK.B, Financial) third quarter profit by $4.4 billion.
