'Fed up with eBay' Celebrates Independence

By: Ina Steiner

To the Editor:
I'm a great fan of AuctionBytes! I just want to tell everyone the best thing eBay has ever done for me is hire Donahoe! Ebay's asinine policy changes forced me to pretty much leave eBay to list elsewhere and get my own web site.

I now list on Bonanzle and have my own site at shamrockgardenantiques.com. Needless to say I haven't got as much traffic as I had at eBay but it takes time to build a following. Although I am selling less because I'm new, I am profiting about the same as I did with eBay. No listing fee, final value fee, the site even hosts my pics so I don't have to pay an image host.

It cost me $200 for someone to build my site and I will pay $50 per year for my domain name. Nobody tells me how to run my business in any way shape or form. I can service my customers any way I want. Of course I'm honest, etc, but if I want to accept chickens as a form of payment I can!
Regards,
Fed Up With eBay

The road off ebay is slow and painful at first. In a few months you will do better than listing on ebay.

Just list everywhere you can and promote your website first and foremost.

If you can start your own affiliate program and give those ebay fee's to webmasters driving sales to you.

Only list your junk on ebay because the prices ebay auctions bring are terrible. Keep the good stuff for your website because people like quality and they do pay for it.

Good Luck

Congratulations!  Bet it feels good to be running your own business again instead of paying ebay to abuse you like an employee.

I joined Bonanzle over 2 months ago and couldn't be happier.  Selling as much?  No, not yet.  Making money?  Yes, with a lot less work and aggravation ... and I actually get to keep the profit instead of paying the monster.

Wishing you well!

You really don't realize just how bad Ebay has gotten until you make a sale on another site or on your own website.  Just experience the freedom you have to control your transaction and to please your customer and you'll never want to go back to ebay.

Hi everyone,

Sorry if this comes across as an ad, but my company just launched a service that we're hoping could alleviate some of the ''post eBay blues'' most of you have mentioned. We'd like to hear any feedback you can offer us since your experience with eBay gives you a unique perspective on this topic.

Basically, we host a price negotiation system that sellers running traditional e-commerce web sites could use to convert more visitors into customers. Its original design is what eBay's Best Offer feature is based on (http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y05/m06/i08/s01), but now we've re-engineered it to work on virtually any e-commerce platform.

We're still looking for shopping cart vendors to partner with, but feel free to check it out and let us know what you think!

I to left ebay for the same reason as others, JD, high fees, low sale rates, fees, and more fees. Do to low traffic to my items about 60-6-70% of profit was going to pay ebay and paypal fees. Now I am on eCrater all for free, easy google shopping linkage, higher search traffic, and my traffic is much higher then ebay. eCrater gets 3-1 traffic hits to Bonanzle, 10-1 to eBid, so out of the top alts, eCrater has been the best move for us.

Dear Ina, David, the Auctionbytes staff and subscribers,
I can't begin to tell all of you how grateful i am to have all the information that has been shared-available- as well as the 'comments'.

At various roads/junctures along the past couple of years at ebay.. i'm sure all of us.. has wondered 'is it just me?' - what happened to the sales? Why can't I find MY listings? Etc-Etc

Selling at/on Ebay has made me feel Frustrated, angry, broke, sick, disheartened, devoid of any hope..-waiting /hoping that things go 'BACK' to what they were at ebay.
I have been with ebay almost 10 yrs now-and cannot for the life of me- still -figure out what exactly is going on there(ebay)-but i have figured out, and accepted that it's time to stop being a 'ONE TRICK PONY' (which is a old phrase).

The masses here at Auctionbytes have given me the 'tools', self confidence, information, and guidance -I (and many like me) to finally take a stab at grabbing the brass ring. So much energy, time and money has been wasted at Ebay-which could have been better spent getting my own house in order-but I am of very limited means, and knowledge when it comes to technology.

Somewhere along the way.. not only did i lose total incentive-I also lost the original perspective of what i was actually doing-and allowed myself to be a 'VICTIM' of ebay.

Thanks to all of you- and those whom have shared their experiences, and knowledge- I know Next Month is going to be a better month-and i will independant of ebay (as well as following commenter 'Joe's suggestion)

Each month-the worry grew more.. to the point i was worried if i'd even have just the listing fees (of which it's been out of pocket for a few months now)

I'm not very computer savvy.. and have  felt as if having my own website was a far reach.. realistically and finacially-but after reading the 1st (shamrockantiques/aka/'Fed Up With eBay' ) comment-and the most encouraging ones to follow from  Joe , Kw.. etc's I Now feel as if I've been Empowered... as if there is -if even the smallest glimmer- a beacon of hope to make it.  I won't be at the mercy of the Ebay.

I can do this!  I CAN DO IT ... and that's thanks to all of you. I know things will be tough at the start.. but no worse off then where i've been.

For any of you that could suggest or guide me and those like me.. to starter points.. as Shamrockantiques/aka/'Fed Up With eBay' has... any more suggestions, information etc.. would be highly appreciated.

Thank You Everyone ! Thank You Ina, and David. :)

Setting up your own site isn't really as hard as it once was. With wordpress and a decent theme you can get quite a bit done with a rather small learning curve.

Bonanzle is a decently search optimized selling venue...and their forums have a wealth of information for getting the basic marketing tasks there taken care of.

If you don't have more time than cash, there is a section of my site which outlines building a web site as a support platform for online stores such as Bonanzle as well as various thoughts on marketing stores and sites...completely free / no strings attached. I guess I have too much time on my hands =)

Thank you JG and Tony Lee.
Thank you Tony Lee for your information is  encouraging.

I just finished signing up with ecrater, bonanzle, ola and another one (can't remember which one off top of my head).

While i spend time 'learning'- i should be out there marketing my stuff and the costs i will incur will be nothing near what ebay has robbed me of.

Tony-I put you email address in my address book- and will be in touch with you soon.
Is it really true- that it only costs about $200 a year?
I dread the thought of having to deal with 'Google'- as they have no real support system.

Plus from what i've read- my feelings about 'Google' are still suspicious.
I almost fell off my chair when i read about the top sites all being in colusion with ebay-not that i'm surprised-but if i ever voiced -the very same topic which i suspected-I'm afraid others would have thought me to be a Lunatic.

I'm taking large 'toddler' steps-and being pretty aggressive about it. It sure beats having to pull cash out of household allowance for food and bills.
Plus i'm gaining my self respect and self confidence.

Over the past couple of years.. the best way i can describe how i've been feeling.. is - well- i guess like an addict who is going through 'withdrawl'.

I got used to an average of x amount of extra dollars coming in- (which to most isn't alot, but every nickel here counts)- and then i'm suddenly thrown into a closet and the door is locked.

The monies i got used to making kept getting smaller and smaller.
Even though the economy isn't the best-there is money moving around -but none of it seems to come my way (as i'm sure many ebayers and former ebays would also agree).
I've reached the point that 'I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE'. So as the 'kids' say.. i had better 'get with the program'. lol :)

Thanks again everyone. I'll be back  :)

You can pay less then $50 for your domain name.  Register it at Go Daddy or one of the other sites and save yourself some money.

Has anyone got a list of the alternate auction sites?  We're putting an article on our website about using sites other the Ebay.

Here is a link to a site on self promotion Http://www.selfpromotion.com it's free and has good info.

We use a site called WAHMShoppes for our store it's $8 a month and we have the ability to collect secure credit card numbers.

To Nervous In NY:
You asked for suggestions so here is mine. I am not posting this to be mean, only helpful. Make sure you have a well informed proofreader for your website. I would not buy from a website that has poor grammar and sentence structure, as your posts do. It must be professional, as there is no room for errors. I am not trying to be overly critical. I wish you the best of luck and success in your endeavors. (I'm not saying that I am without error, we are only human.)
