TRONOX KZN Sands have built 91 quality houses for families living around its depleted and closed Hillendale Mine, and is aiming to build another 30 this year.
Sustainable Development Manager Nick Bulunga said the company had received an influx of requests in 2012 from host community members who had been battling with poor structures ,largely made out of mud and substandard building materials that often collapse during heavy rains.
‘The Hillendale community is very poor. Almost half the community is unemployed, with a large majority without matric.
‘During rainy seasons, some of their houses simply collapse,’ said Bulunga.
‘With our intervention, 91 of 214 families now have quality houses that give them dignity and pride.
‘And this year, 30 more houses are going to be built in the area, bringing the total number to 121 from 2013 to date.’
Tronox added the Dube Housing Project further empowers the community by allocating construction contracts to locals.
‘In this way, short-term job opportunities are also created. This makes a difference in the lives of community members.’
