FARMINGTON — A developer for a project that will bring the retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods to the city said the store will open Nov. 4.

Developer Josh Skarsgard confirmed the opening by phone on Tuesday.

To staff the new 45,000-square-foot storefront at 5050 E. Main St., Dick’s plans to hire 60 full- and part-time employees, according to a Sept. 25 press release from the company.

Applicants should be “passionate about sports or the outdoors” and “draw on their personal experiences and in-depth knowledge to guide, inform, equip and inspire (Dick’s) customers,” according to the release.

The sporting goods store will offer “competitive pay” to people who fill manager-level and associate positions, the release also says.

People interested in working at the store can go to the company’s website at dickssportinggoods.jobs to apply.

Based in Pittsburgh, Dick’s has three other New Mexico locations – two in Albuquerque and one in Las Cruces.

Dick’s will share space with two other buildings in the new Farmington Pavilion, said Skarsgard, whose Albuquerque firm, Skarsgard Development, is in charge of the project. The 6.88-acre shopping area with a contemporary Southwest look will also include the Georgia-based fast-food restaurant Chick-fil-A.

But the fast-food chain will not break ground until next year, Skarsgard said.

“(Chik-fil-A) wants to break ground sometime in May or June, after the cold season,” Skarsgard said.

Chik-fil-A has two locations in Las Cruces and four in Albuquerque. The Farmington location will be the seventh in New Mexico, according to the company’s website.

Skarsgard said negotiations with two other businesses that will occupy the third standalone building in the Farmington Pavilion will be finalized in two weeks.

He praised the city’s community development department for help getting the Dick’s store open before winter.

Skarsgard’s other Farmington project, a Del Taco restaurant, will add to Main Street’s plentiful fast-food offerings. The American-style Mexican chain is currently under construction and will be located near the corner of Piñon Hills Boulevard and East Main Street, next to Lowe's Home Improvement and Blue Diamond Auto Spa.

Originally scheduled to open in this month, Del Taco will now open its doors in early December, Skarsgard said.

Skarsgard said both commercial projects were going well, and he praised the city for its help in launching both projects.

“The city’s (community development department is) the best I’ve ever worked with,” he said. “They are the reason we got (Dick’s) built so fast.”

The new Dick's Sporting Goods Store is seen Tuesday on East Main Street in Farmington.

Cindy Lopez, senior planner in the city’s community development department, said the city is excited about adding more retailers like Dick’s to the area.

“We are excited, and we’re trying to make sure that we can accommodate things so they get done in a timely fashion,” Lopez said. “We know the community’s excited, and we’re excited to get it up and running.”
