The maker of Skippy peanut butter announced on Thursday that it is voluntarily recalling hundreds of jars of peanut butter that could contain metal shavings.

The maker of Skippy peanut butter announced on Thursday it is voluntarily recalling certain jars of peanut butter that could contain metal shavings.

Hormel Foods Corporation is recalling 153 cases of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread amid concerns that it may be contaminated by “small pieces of metal shavings,” the company said in a statement.

The metal shavings were caused by an equipment malfunction that has since been repaired, Rick Williamson, a Hormel Foods Corporation spokesman said in the statement.

"Only a very small amount of product was affected. Unfortunately, a pallet of product that was to be destroyed was inadvertently released," Williamson told USA TODAY Network.

According to Hormel, the peanut butter was sent to Publix, Target and Walmart distribution centers in Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware and Arkansas.

The affected items are limited to the 16.3-ounce jars with a date of DEC1416LR1 and a package UPC code of 37600-10500. Consumers can exchange any contaminated jars of peanut butter to the store where they purchased the item.

No injuries related to the metal shavings have been reported, according to the company's statement.
