Amid news of Viacom layoffs, low network ratings and MTV Iggy (a division of MTV World) shuttering, rumors are running rampant that this year may be the last for the Video Music Awards, the annual music video celebratory ceremony. Multiple sources tell Billboard that the VMAs may be in jeopardy after 2015.
Are the VMAs done? Probably not, according to a Viacom rep, who denies that the award show’s days are numbered, adding that the rumors are “not even remotely true.”
2014 VMAs Ratings Down Despite Blue Ivy Surprise
The VMAs have been running since 1984, and the show entered its 32nd edition tonight. Last year’s event met with an 18 percent ratings dip — drawing just 8.3 million total viewers after pulling in 10.3 million in 2013.
