OUT & ABOUT: Whole Foods is taking on an entire invasive species

On Monday and Tuesday, Whole Foods in Destin will be offering lionfish for $8.99 per pound.

I’m not a big fan of the apocalyptic TV shows in which society falls apart, although the notion of rebuilding does provoke thought.

One question is what would happen to our environment if we were no longer able to control invasive species such as Chinese tallow trees, fire ants or lionfish?

Whole Foods Market takes on one of those species by offering a special Memorial Day price on the lionfish.

Monday and Tuesday, the Destin Whole Foods Market offers an $8.99 per pound special on the non-native, gulf-invading fish. Store team members can assist in menu planning and recipe tips.

“In an effort to educate the public on the importance of lionfish removal, promotions such as this will encourage continued involvement in proactively and successfully removing lionfish from coastal waters,” said David Ventura, Whole Foods Market seafood coordinator for the Florida region.

If you’re looking for a quicker meal and you happen to be in Milton, visit the Arby’s restaurant that recently underwent remodeling.

Located at 6674 Carolina St., this is among the first of the area Arby’s to undergo an extensive design renovation. The new look reflects the new direction for the brand, which includes a variety of meats in its sandwiches. Once known primarily for its sliced roast beef, Arby’s now offers a Brown Sugar Bacon sandwich or a Rueben-inspired corned beef.

A week ago, Dusty Ricketts announced that I’m the new Out & About writer. I suspect that before finishing the first cup of coffee that day, Ted Corcoran sent to me an outreach email.

Corcoran serves as president of the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, and he suggested we meet for lunch. The opportunity gave me a chance to ask him about the upcoming Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival that runs from June 2-6.

The festival was started as a fun family event and Corcoran suggested families be sure to check out kids’ night June 2 in downtown Fort Walton Beach.

“The Thursday (June 2) kids’ night in downtown is one of the most underrated events,” he continued. “It’s just really fun."

For information about the Bowlegs festival, visit www.fwbchamber.org/events/61st-Annual-Billy-Bowlegs-Pirate-Festival-3554/details.

As a side note, Corcoran and I met at the Two Trees Restaurant on Lewis Turner Boulevard in Fort Walton Beach. That is the first time I had been there for lunch, and I was impressed.

Not only does the dining room offer a great view of the improved Fort Walton Beach Golf Course, but the food and service are wonderful. The patrons represent a microcosm of Fort Walton Beach, coming from all walks of life.
