Age: 93

Residence: Windsor

Mary Wambolt Weichel, 93, of Windsor, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 23, 2013. Mary was born April 20, 1920, in Windsor to George and Mary Katherine (Hettinger) Wambolt.

Mary’s parents were of German descent. They emigrated from Russia to the U.S. in 1906. Mary grew up working with her family in the sugar beet fields.

While growing up, she developed a love for gospel and Western music. Although she never learned to read music, Mary learned to play the guitar and the organ by ear.

She attended Windsor schools. She was confirmed in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Windsor. She became a member of Faith United Church of Christ when Zion and the Congregational Church voted to unite.

Mary Wambolt was united in marriage on Oct. 5, 1938, to Clarence Weichel of Kersey, Colo. Together, they raised four children. They farmed, milked cows and fed cattle in the Windsor and Timnath area. During this time, a nephew, Harvey Johnson, joined the family to finish high school in Colorado.

Mary loved going to her children’s school activities. She was active in the Windsor Wrangler Saddle Club. Mary loved to cook and entertain. No one could stop at the house and leave without having a cup of coffee or tea and a cookie or piece of pie or cake. Mary was a loving grandmother and the happiest when one or more of the grandchildren were around.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Harland) Haas; sons, Dennis (Jennifer) Weichel, Paul (Susan) Weichel, and Bill (Elaine) Weichel; nephew, Harvey (Vina) Johnson; brother-in-law, Gordon (Clarkie) Weichel; sister-in-law, Madeline Wambolt; eight grandsons; six granddaughters; 11 great-grandsons; eight great-granddaughters; one great-great-granddaughter; and one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant daughter, four brothers and five sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Faith United Church of Christ in Windsor. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Church of Christ, in care of Marks Funeral & Cremation Service, 9293 Eastman Park Drive, Windsor, CO 80550.
