SAGINAW, MI -- Saginaw-based AKT Peerless was involved in a Detroit construction project that is receiving two national awards.

The awards for the Cardinal Health Medical Distribution Center are a regional Phoenix Award and Redevelopment & Renewal Environmental Impact Award.

The Cardinal Health Medical Distribution Center, located at 6000 Rosa Parks, serves Henry Ford Health System, Detroit Medical Center and other local medical centers, according to a news release. The newly-constructed, 275,000-square-foot distribution facility opened in May and represents a new investment of about $28 million.

AKT Peerless provided environmental and development incentive consulting services.

The awards are to be presented Thursday, Sept. 3, at the 2015 National Brownfields Training Conference in Chicago.

The Redevelopment & Renewal Environmental Impact Award is to be presented by Renewal Magazine, which also plans to highlight the project's environmental best practices in its next issue, the release states.

The Phoenix Award was established to recognize successful revitalization projects across the country that exhibit excellence in brownfield redevelopment, according to the release. The project was selected as the best project in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5, which includes Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

As a regional award winner, the project is now competing for the People's Choice Award, which is selected by attendees of the 2015 National Brownfields Training Conference. It is also eligible for the grand prize selected by the Phoenix Award judges.

"AKT Peerless nominated the project for these awards because we knew it was noteworthy and we felt KIRCO and Henry Ford Health System deserved recognition for their persistence, vision and success, but we were a bit overwhelmed by the response," Anthony Kashat, principal of AKT Peerless, said in a statement. "We aren't aware of any previous projects that earned both of these national awards."

"This redevelopment represents a significant transformation of blighted, contaminated and obsolete properties in Detroit," Kashat's statement continued. "And sets a new bar for similar redevelopment initiatives."

Tim McGahey, vice president of environmental due diligence at AKT Peerless, said "the development team showed uncompromising resolve to see this project to completion."

"It's nice when a Detroit project is nationally recognized by our peers in the redevelopment industry, but to receive multiple national awards is indicative of the magnitude of the impact of this project," he said in a statement.
