The Polo Bar, Ralph Lauren’s clubby restaurant in Manhattan, is something of a visual ode to equestrian culture. Oil paintings of horses and jockeys line the walls, silver trophies sit on mantelpieces, and perfectly worn saddles hang over clutches of wooden polo mallets arranged just so. One might forget, after a few cocktails, that this walnut-paneled retreat is actually in a Midtown basement.

For those who don’t plan on making the trip to Churchill Downs this weekend, the restaurant is airing the Kentucky Derby in its bar after five P.M. for guests with dinner reservations. Of the various traditions associated with the race—extravagant hats, song-singing—the most appealing might be the frosty, bourbon-y mint julep.

The Polo Bar’s version is made with Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, muddled with strawberries and served in a glass etched with Ralph Lauren’s signature Polo pony motif. Garnished (at the risk of crossing equestrian wires) with a miniature polo mallet, it’s the perfect thing to sip on while watching the two most exciting minutes in sports.
