A Havelock woman was killed early Sunday morning when the vehicle she was driving south on N.C. 306 in Pamlico County crossed the centerline and struck a northbound pickup truck head-on.

According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 12:12 a.m. Sunday south of Grantsboro.

Troopers say Shannah Marie Pierce, 30, was driving a 2009 Nissan Cube when she crossed the centerline of the two-lane highway and struck a 2002 GMC pickup truck driven by Cody Bennett, 20, who listed a New Bern area address.

Pierce, who was alone in the Nissan, was killed in the crash.

Bennett and two unidentified passengers sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to the highway patrol. They were taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern for treatment.

It is unclear why Pierce crossed the centerline.

Bennett, who is underage, was charged with driving while impaired and consuming while operating a motor vehicle while under the age of 21, according to the highway patrol.
