The Happiest Companies To Work For In 2017

This article is more than 7 years old.

If you work full time, you spend at least one-third of your waking hours at your job. So feeling fulfilled in your role is critical. Yesterday careers website CareerBliss released its seventh annual list of the companies with the happiest employees.

On CareerBliss, workers submit reviews of their employers. The happiest companies ranking looks at how employees rated their work environment, relationship with management, growth opportunities, compensation and satisfaction with their specific position. The list takes into account more than 22,000 reviews.

This ranking includes fewer technology and consulting companies than you might expect for a happiest employees list. According to CareerBliss, pharmaceutical and financial companies have gained momentum by offering more career development programs and opportunities for growth. Another factor at play could be the makeup of the CareerBliss user base, which likely differs from that of larger career sites.

Bristol-Myers Squibb came in first place. The New York-based pharmaceutical company has about 25,000 employees, and arthritis and leukemia drugs are among its best-selling products. According to one CareerBliss reviewer for Bristol-Myers Squibb, “If you are a positive, interactive, enthusiastic, team-playing individual with a desire for continuous learning and growth, you will do well.”

Cincinnati-based Total Quality Logistics ranked fifth. TQL is a freight brokerage firm—it connects companies that need products shipped with those that do the shipping, and it has 3,200 workers. One reviewer calls the company “fast paced and exciting,” adding, “strong leadership and work ethic emanates from this company.”

Energy firm Chevron claimed the ninth spot. Based in northern California, Chevron has nearly 62,000 employees, about 3,000 of which work at service stations. Although the company’s net profits dropped steeply from $19.2 billion in 2014 to $4.6 billion in 2015 as oil prices crashed, its stock has been rebounding since early this year. One CareerBliss user says people at Chevron “are very safety minded.” Another writes, “The compensation and benefits have been fantastic.”

Although it didn’t fall in the top ten, Texas Instruments made CareerBliss’ list for its fifth straight year and ranked 30th. Qualcomm has made the cut for seven years in a row and ranked 41st this year.
