Boulder Community Health has acquired 6.1 acres of Erie land slated for a new two-story, 40,000-square-foot medical office building equipped with an urgent care facility.

The company purchased the land at the northwest corner of Erie Parkway and South Briggs Street for $1.6 million from Pat A. Tackwell, Richard Sheehan, BCH’s director of marketing and public relations, said on Wednesday.

Apart from a small primary care office, the BCH facility will be Erie’s first large-scale medical site, a deficiency that town officials have looked to correct amid the community’s growth over the last decade.

Plans were set in motion last fall after trustees approved an ordinance allowing for an “urgent care facility” as a permitted use on the slated land parcel.

“It’s a need of the community to bring a (medical facility) in,” Erie spokesman Fred Diehl told the Camera last fall. “Bringing this facility in would be an example of how we are attracting and ultimately delivering on primary employers to support businesses in historic downtown and the four corners.”

It is unclear how many jobs the facility would eventually bring in.

Construction on the site is expected to begin later this year, BCH officials said, who added that if progress remains on schedule, it should be finished by the end of 2018.

“Boulder Community Health has served the residents of Erie for many years,” BCH Chief Business Officer Darryl Brown said in a statement. “Now we will serve directly in the growing community. This property is strategically located to serve Erie and the surrounding communities.”
