Could Giants kick the tires on veteran Nick Folk?

As things currently stand, the New York Giants have only one kicker on their roster and that comes by way of Aldrick Rosas, who was signed to a reserve/futures deal in mid-January.

Rosas, who was initially signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Oregon University, has yet to play an NFL snap.

Meanwhile, kicker Robbie Gould is slated to become an unrestricted free agent after his partial season with Big Blue, having taken over for Josh Brown after he was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List due to revelations regarding his domestic violence history with his ex-wife, Molly.

This leaves the Giants in obvious need of a veteran kicker, and as fate would have it, the New York Jets have recently supplied them with an option.

Last week, Gang Green made a round of releases which included center Nick Mangold and kicker Nick Folk. Both players could potentially make sense for the Giants, but the need for a player like Folk is far more glaring.

A 10-year veteran, Folk has called East Rutherford home since 2010. And although the winds at MetLife Stadium aren’t quite as bad as the winds at the old Giants Stadium, there’s still something to be said for kickers who have Meadowlands experience.

Folk also has NFC East experience, having spent three years with the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.

In 10 seasons, Folk has connected on 239 of his 294 field goal attempts, good for 81.3%, and 335 of his 337 point after attempts — both misses came in 2016. He was also named to the 2007 Pro Bowl.

Although Folk isn’t the same kicker he was 10 years ago, he does have the aforementioned Meadowlands experience and fits an obvious need for Big Blue. And given their current kicking situation, don’t be surprised if you see his name pop up over the next week or so.
