SYSCO Corporation Posts FQ4 Earnings

SYSCO Corporation (NYSE:SYY)’s stock moved 2.1% in the green today after the company posted fiscal fourth-quarter results, surpassing bottom-line estimates. The Texas-based food products company posted adjusted EPS of $0.64 on $13.60 billion revenue, versus the consensus estimates of $0.61 in EPS on $13.68 billion in revenue. Net income rose to $215.67 million, or $0.38 per share, from $73.03 million posted in the same quarter last year.  SYSCO’s CEO Bill DeLaney said in a statement that in fiscal 2016, the company made progress on its three-year plan of financial objectives. Mid-America Apartment Communities to Buy Post Properties

Investors are watching Post Properties Inc (NYSE:PPS) following news that it would be acquired by Mid-America Apartment Communities Inc (NYSE:MAA) for about $3.88 billion. The merger would create the biggest multifamily apartment real estate investment trust by units, having a market cap of about $17 billion. According to the terms of the definitive agreement, Post Properties shareholders will get 0.71 Mid-America Apartment shares for each share of Post Properties they own. The companies said in a joint statement that the synergy would help in cutting $20 million a year in costs and other operating efficiencies. Shares of Post Properties Inc (NYSE:PPS) skyrocketed above 8%, while Mid-America Apartment Communities Inc (NYSE:MAA) plummeted by more than 5% so far today on the back of the news. Jim Simons’ Renaissance Technologies held 418,500 shares of Post Properties and 758,162 shares of Mid-America Apartment Communities heading into the third quarter.

Kingold Jewelry Posts Impressive Earnings Report

 Kingold Jewelry Inc (NASDAQ:KGJI)’s stock has soared by over 8% so far today as the company continues to get traders’ attention after posting second-quarter EPS of $0.30 on revenue of $390.3 million, better than last quarter’s earnings of $0.01 a share on $249.4 million revenue. The China-based jewelry company reiterated its guidance of 50-60 metric tons of 24-karat gold processed in 2016. Kingold Jewelry’s CEO Zhihong Jia said in a statement that the company’s financial results got a boost due to a rebound in prices and increasing demand in China. During the second quarter, Ken Griffin’s Citadel Advisors closed its position in Kingold Jewelry, while Renaissance Technologies increased its stake by 48% to 34,900 shares.

Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Getting Battered

Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:AUPH)’s stock is getting hammered today and is down by over 55% after the company posted overall positive top-line results of Phase 2b of its clinical trial, Voclosporin, but said there were 13 deaths across the trial. The deaths during the trial were assessed by the study investigator, and they were found to be unrelated to study treatment, said Aurinia. Nevertheless, the drug met its primary efficacy endpoint in patients with active lupus nephritis (LN), an inflammation of the kidney caused by the autoimmune disorder systemic lupus erythematosus. The Canadian biopharmaceutical company said in a statement that it plans to meet with the FDA in the fourth quarter of 2016 to discuss these the results and path towards registration of the treatment. Renaissance Technologies reported ownership of 41,100 shares of Aurinia Pharmaceuticals in its 13F filing for the end of June.
