The 2016 Toyota Innova recently made its debut in Indonesia, where it is referred to as the Toyota Kijang Innova. The MPV may appear to have only undergone a facelift but looks can be deceiving, because the second-generation Innova actually shares very little of its predecessor’s components.
In an interview with Toyota Motor Manufaturing Indonesia (TMMIN) director of production engineering, Nandi Julianto, Otomotif Kompas reports that the new Innova shares “only 5% of its components with the outgoing model, which is, apparently, a few bolts and screws.”
Beyond that, the Innova shares almost nothing with the previous model as evident by its styling and impressive list of features. The Innova also rides on a revised ladder frame chassis that has been tweaked to offer better strength and structural rigidity.
Powering the Innova are two engine choices, a 2.0 litre Dual VVT-i 1TR-FE four-cylinder petrol providing 139 PS at 5,600 rpm and 183 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, and a new 2GD-FTV 2.4 litre turbodiesel mill from the Hilux offering 149 PS at 3,400 rpm and 359 Nm of torque from 1,200 to 2,600 rpm.
However, most of the Innova’s kit is reserved for the top-spec diesel Q Type only, including the Smart Close Back Door, 17-inch wheels, LED projector headlights and an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. Even safety features such as the seven airbags and VSC are exclusive to the Q Type.
It would be a real shame if Malaysian models lose out on those features. However, it is yet unknown when the MPV will land on our shores, and the variants that will be offered. Nonetheless, would you be interested in the new Toyota Innova?

Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
Toyota shame to tell Vios share 85% old parts
Is why everyone goes to buy the new City
Wanna try out new parts? Go VW or Proton then. Good luck to you. The City has a lot of defects too.
but the city is still outselling the vios by a mile
#sayonaraVios
Got info from insurance agency, lots of vios in the workshop. Clue – rainy season
Better go to SC to repair defect than workshop, broken here & there coz of accidents.
5 years warranty with unlimited mileage, use it well. Rather than 3 years/100k km only from Toyota.
Saga also outselling the city many miles. Saga a better car? Think again!
In overseas, Toyota is highly respected. But in Malaysia, Toyota now has become a laughing stock. If you buy one, people secretly laugh at you thinking you are the dumbest person in town cause the Toyota is heavily stripped of its safety features. Now somemore, Picanto, comes with 6 airbags and can be safer than a Camry!
Malaysians already now know how Toyota has been cheating people. Until today, even RM150k Camry got no VSC and only 2 airbags. Paultan already wrote long article how vital VSC is 3 years ago and yet UMW don’t care a damn for our lives.
Global price of Camry with 10 airbags and VSC is US$22,000. Besides VSC and 10 airbags, the global Camry has about 20 other safety features that is NOT in our Camry. These features are standard and free on the global Camry.
UMW don’t care about your life. you die or vegetable, they don’t care, janji untung lebih. they take out safety features to save cost. Yet, they charge us 3x the global price of US$22k. We buy for RM180k a heavily stripped down car. Same with Altis. Same with Vios and this junk Innova.
Worse still, it is CKD and Made in Malaysia. The price is even cheaper. If US Toyota is sold at US22k and still make a profit, you can bet that UMW will get this car at country distributor price of US15k. CKD it, it will be US$12k (about RM40k). But they sell to Malaysians for RM180k.
Camry Hybrid even better. US$26k. Come to Malaysia no tax. But sold for RM175k
This Innova is a cheap junk overseas. Come to Malaysia, sell over RM100k
Understood v will get most lowest specs when it will b sell to malaysia shores.guaranteed
Looks good but engine spec shows it is not powerful
still a boring van
wow.spirited driving for a van..cool story bro..
majority don’t care la
this car is not meant for single, non-married person.
but it can be meaningful for people who interested to set up a family, or better already have a happy family to travel together.
some may love the fact that can carry friends for travelling during weekends.
Bread van, no thanks
when the video show the number of airbags, i cant even see how many airbags are there?
VSC? MIA (Missing in Action)…LOL….
Anyway, thumbs up for the 6 speeds gear box… (Finally)
Wear your specs.
The picture show 7 Airbags already la
I’m waiting for the TRD sportivo version hahahaha (sarcasm)
THE 2.0L engine alwaysy have low torque ,for a car this big, thus has bad pickup
dont need talk hp , is same low ,
5% should include the Toyota logos and Innova badges.
Base spec Camry has 2 airbags. The Altis also only has 2 airbags, unless you get a ridiculous “safety package” to make it 7. Both are much more expensive. You guys seriously think the cheaper Innova will be any better?
I’m guessing UMWT will CKD the new Innova, just like the current one, but that means it will take longer to get here. The new Avanza got here so fast because it’s a CBU model.
UMWT should offer 7 airbags and VSC with the top spec Innova at least, just like their Camry Hybrid. If Toyota Indonesia can do it, why can’t UMWT do it too ? But please, no ‘optional Safety Pack add-on’… ‘optional TRD bodykit’ can, but safety should not be ‘optional’, not on a RM100k car.
HRV Tail lamps on the rear of a TOYOTA Innova. The designers must have ran out of ideas
very nice..
My dad-in-law 1999 Toyolta Unser, hitting 400k km mileage, still running like a brand new honda ex5. Besides the regular service and maintenance, the Only major repair was to replace the alternator. Thats it. Reliable? Hell Yeah. Will i get myself a Kijang? Hell NO. ugly like sheet!
It look like the hilux plateform, very high % of hilux parts is used. only those visible parts is new, a basic cut n paste.
Pretty much RELIABLE. The only downside is VSC, Torque, Extra Airbag and bad milage. Why the because? Go ask UMW. ‘They’ very know bout it but still placed their ego at the top of Mt. Everest. I blame nobody if you know what I mean. Eat that UMW.
