Ping, ping, ping — that’s the sound of Cupid’s arrows hitting his targets on his worldwide Love Tour. The Expedia Heat Index, a survey by Expedia and GfK, a research company, polled more than 1,000 Americans about destinations that make their hearts go pitter-patter. The report also asked travelers about vacationing as a “we, “ and conversely, becoming an “I” while on holiday.

Nearly 70 percent of respondents ranked the City of Light as the most romantic city to visit with their special someone, followed by Rome (56 percent) and Florence (43 percent). It also took the top spot for its ooh-la-la sexiness (61 percent) as well as for being the destination where most singles would want to spend Valentine’s Day. As for the pretty-people places in which they would want to meet someone: Los Angeles, Miami and New York. Meanwhile, the cities best for the Carries and Bridgets of the world: New York (48 percent), Los Angeles (35 percent) and Las Vegas (33 percent).

So what happens on vacation — more than 15 percent said they have hooked up on a trip — stays on vacation, right? Not always. Nearly 25 percent of people said they would consider extending the relationship after the trip, and 42 percent said continuing the love match depends on how far away the other person lives. Sadly, some hearts shatter away from home: Four percent of Americans have ended a relationship while traveling.

As for when to pop the big question: Shall we go away together? Thirty percent said it is appropriate to travel a deux within one to three months, whereas 25 percent would wait four to eight months. And 4 percent take the plunge on the first date. Hope they brought their toothbrushes — and passports — to dinner.
