Monterey >> When the 79th annual Monterey County Fair swings into action on Wednesday, it will actually be building on more than 200 years of history.

A New England fellow named Elkanah Watson is credited with holding the first county fair in the early 1800s when he exhibited some livestock in Massachusetts. Soon, fairs were popping up all over the country and people started competing for the best bull and fastest horse. Then came produce and home goods and all the other fun add-ons we’re familiar with today.

“Fairs are built on a tradition of agriculture and competitions,” said Jacky Eshelby, communications representative for the Monterey County Fair. “That’s why you see all the competitions — the jams and the quilts.”

So while you may be tempted to jump straight to the carnival rides — we’ll certainly distract you with some recommendations here — don’t neglect the livestock shows, farmers market and buildings full of handmade goods. After all, that’s what fairs are for.

The theme this year is “Farm Fresh Fun.” Here are some highlights:

Tower of Power >> At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, Tower of Power will shake the leaves off the oaks with its Oakland soul sound. Known for such hits as “So Very Hard to Go,” “You’re Still a Young Man” and “What is Hip,” the band’s horn section is the driving force behind its success. Founders Emilio Castillo on tenor sax and Stephen “Doc” Kupka on baritone sax are still part of the lineup. The show is included with the price of admission.

Street Drum Corps >> This high-energy drum and percussion group from Los Angeles bangs out rhythms on everything from trash cans and junk to the real thing. The core trio of Bobby Alt, Adam Alt and Frank Zummo have played with honorary members such as Tommy Lee, Max Weinberg and Chad Smith. They’ll perform Wednesday, Sept. 2, on the grounds.

Battle for the Silver Ticket >> From noon-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, watch as “American Idol” hopefuls vie for a chance to audition in front of judges in San Francisco.

The Mark and Dre Comedy Show >> A juggling comedy show with audience participation, featuring machetes and tomfoolery.

Carnival >> There are four new rides this year, including one that Helm and Sons Amusements says is “themed after a very popular movie featuring adorable little yellow characters” (one presumes Minions). There’s also a section called Cub Country, where children 5 and under can ride their little rides without competition from the bigger kids.

Rodeo >> Four nights of bulls and broncs start at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, with an extra $5 admission.

Pig racing >> With names such as Pigonce, Tyra Piggy Banks and Miss Piggy Gaga, these porcine runners are always a crowd favorite.

Fair food >> Funnel cakes, corn dogs and bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Can’t go wrong.

The fair runs Sept. 2-7, opening at noon each day. For tickets and information, see www.montereycountyfair.com.
