Bard IVC filterC.R. Bard faces a new IVC filter side effects lawsuit from a young woman alleging serious injuries caused by the device.

The young woman had the Denali Vena Cava filter implanted on two different occasions, and has had to be vigilant against IVC filter complications due to the defective nature of the device.

The Denali Vena Cava filter is both a retrievable and permanent IVC filter which can either be placed permanently or temporarily inside the patient’s body.

Like other IVC filters, the Denali Vena Cava filter is implanted in the patient’s inferior vena cava to prevent the risks of blood clot injuries.

IVC filters are designed to trap blood clots forming in the pelvis or legs and prevent them from traveling to the hearts or lungs.

After the blood clots resolve themselves, the retrievable IVC filters can be removed.

However many IVC filter lawsuits have alleged that the retrievable models are defectively made.

According to her IVC filter side effects lawsuitTexas plaintiff Jessica W. had the Denali Vena Cava Filter implanted on two separate occasions, once in May 2014 and again in September 2014.

Jessica is filing legal action against the manufacturing company, for failing to warn her against the defective nature of the IVC filter.

Overview of IVC Filter Complications

Detractors claim the retrievable models are made from inferior components which makes them more prone to breaking apart.

Even though IVC filters have been available for years, it is only just recently that the medical community has become concerned over these problems. In 2010, the FDA issued a public safety warning regarding temporary IVC filters.

According to the announcement, the FDA received 921 IVC injury reports from 2005 to 2010 involving: device migration, filter perforation, filter fractures and device embolization.

Approximately 35% of these injury reports involved device migration which occurs when the device migrates away from its implant site.

In a later FDA warning announcement in 2014, the agency stressed the fact that the retrievable IVC filter models were only meant for temporary placement.

The FDA stated that to decrease the chances of IVC filter injuries, the retrievable models should be explanted between the 29th and 54th day after the blood clots are resolved.

Even though Jessica had the retrievable models implanted to resolve the formation of blood clots, her IVC filter side effects lawsuit indicates that the product may have caused her more harm than good.

Jessica’s IVC filter side effects lawsuit has been filed into a growing multidistrict litigation (MDL) where it will stand alongside similar claims.

This IVC filter side effects lawsuit will be consolidated with 800 other IVC filter lawsuits, alleging C.R. Bard failed to warn them against device complications. Jessica’s IVC filter side effects lawsuit was filed on Sept. 6, 2016, in the United States District Court of Arizona

The IVC Filter Side Effects Lawsuit is  Case No. 2:16-cv-02977, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.

In general, IVC filter lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
