Bad news for those of you that need your java fix – that morning cup of coffee is about to cost more.

J.M. Smucker, who owns brands like Folgers and Dunkin’ Donuts, is raising the price of its packaged coffee by about six percent.

Starbucks, the world’s largest coffee shop operator, has raised coffee prices three times between 2013 and 2016.

The reason? Beans are getting pricier.

“The price of our retail beans has gone up a dollar between this year and last year,” said Joseph Finley, manager of Spot Coffee on East Avenue.

Economists predict bean prices will cost, on average, $1.65 per pound by the end of 2017, due to low supply and growing demand

But Finley says the beans might not change prices at Spot Coffee right away.

“For us, we’re not going to make a decision on the price – as it affects the rest of this city, this town, western New York – until we see how other companies are doing so, typically,” he said.

Java’s Cafe on Gibbs Street says they charge $2.25 for an average cup of coffee right now. But that’s about to change.

“It’s going to be going up. This year? This year,” said Frankie Katsampes, a barista at Java’s “I’m not crazy about that idea, but are people probably still going to purchase it? Yes.”
