UPDATE: Bomb Squad Searches Backpack with Protruding Wires

A Walmart store and surrounding businesses in Roseville were evacuated after a suspicious backpack with wires attached to it was found.

This story has been updated:

Roseville police have cleared the Walmart store at 12 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue after a search failed to turn up a bomb or other explosives.

A robot was deployed to investigate a backpack with wires protruding from it before the store was cleared for customers about 11 a.m., Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said.

Store workers found a suicide note with threats against the store, but it was unrelated to the suspicious backback, Berlin said. It is believed to have been left by a recently fired employee who was taken into custody and referred to treatment for a mental illness.

He said in-store surveillance video showed the person who left the backpack behind. “We’ll try to identify him and then we’ll go from there,” Berlin said.

Patch’s original report:

A Walmart store in Roseville was evacuated after a backpack with wires and an apparent suicide note attached to it just after 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to reports on social media and WWJ/CBS Detroit.

The store is located at the corner of 12 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue in the Roseville Towne Center.

Other businesses nearby have also been evacuated.

“I heard there’s three possible bombs, two in the parking lot and one in the Walmart building,” Jennifer Johnson, who works at the Five Below store, told the radio station. “They’ve blocked most of the parking lot off and now they’re having us at Five Below evacuating. I don’t know if they’re really bombs or what.”

The bomb squad has been called in.
