Robinson Secondary Publications Named Finalists in Journalism Competition

Both the middle school and high school yearbooks are among 7 finalists this year in a national student journalism competition.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- Seven Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) student publications have been named finalists for the Pacemaker award, presented by the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). NSPA’s Pacemaker competition has been considered by many to be student journalism’s highest honor.

Finalists include:

  • Sentry, Robinson Secondary School (middle school yearbook); Audrey Hicks and Jaskeerat Raheja, editors, and Pat Hinman, adviser.
  • Odyssey, Chantilly High School; Stephanie Dugan, editor, and Mary Kay Downes, adviser.
  • Techniques, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology; Nandini Radhakrishnan, Ruhee Shah, Naini Shiswawala, and Eileen Zheng, editors, and Erinn Harris, adviser.
  • Lair, Lake Braddock Secondary School (high school yearbook); Gabriella Troncoso and Rachel Ungerleider, editors, and Kathryn Helmke, adviser.
  • The Guardian,Westfield High School; Nick Alexander-Goldsmith, Elis Kim, Crystal Park, and Heather Ren, editors, and Anthony Whitten, adviser.
  • Above & Beyond, Robinson Secondary School (high school yearbook); Sam Sturiale, Asha Chadha, and Daly Hong, editors, and Pat Hinman, adviser.
  • The Clan, McLean High School; Sajanee Chithrahjan, Habiba Feroze, Bianca Rossell, and Yande Thiaw, editors, and Meghan Percival, adviser.

Entries are judged by teams of professionals based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography, and graphics.

Winners will be announced at the Journalism Education Association (JEA)-NSPA spring national high school journalism convention in April.
