T-Mobile targets Sprint with first rival-specific promotion

T-Mobile offering $200 extra to Sprint customers porting their number

T-Mobile US’ promised attack on its rivals kicks off this week, with the nation’s No. 3 carrier setting its sights first on smaller rival Sprint.

T-Mobile US said beginning Nov. 26, it will provide each customer porting a line from Sprint or its prepaid brands Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile a $200 bill credit. The credit does not require a device to be turned in as part of the process.

The $200 credit is on top of the up to $650 T-Mobile US currently provides to customers porting their line over from rivals, which covers any early termination fees or remaining device payments and does require the customer to turn in their old device.

“I cannot think of any wireless customers in more desperate need of some holiday cheer than those Sprint customers still hanging on over there,” poked T-Mobile US CEO John Legere. “Those poor people have put up with the nation’s slowest and smallest LTE network, and their carrier throwing out a deal-of-the-month for everyone except them. We know Sprint’s customers love T-Mobile when they switch, so this holiday season, we’re taking away every barrier and cost to coming over to the Un-carrier and America’s fastest 4G LTE network. Happy holidays!”

T-Mobile US earlier this week announced it would target its rivals over the coming week’s with carrier-specific promotions. As part of the announcement, T-Mobile US said beginning Dec. 1, it will provide its current postpaid customers on Simple Choice rate plans with three months of unlimited LTE data.

The initial focus on Sprint is somewhat expected as the two carriers have shown increased marketing animosity over the past several weeks.

Sprint last week announced the relaunch of its 50% discount promotion for customers porting their numbers over to the carrier, but this year added T-Mobile US to the mix.

The move quickly drew the attention of Legere, who took to social media channels in questioning the Sprint promotion. The challenge included a video component in which Legere railed against the efforts of its smaller rival.

Sprint continued its T-Mobile US-focused efforts late last week by hiring a plane to fly a banner over T-Mobile US’ headquarters, mocking a similar aerial move by T-Mobile US against Verizon Wireless.
