YCIDA sells Harley-Davidson West Campus to development firm for $4.5M

NorthPoint Development, based in Riverside, Mo., is planning a $40 million development project that will attract a tenant to the property’s 750,000-square-foot building and create more than 650 jobs, YCIDA said. The NorthPoint deal will not affect the motorcycle manufacturer’s plant, it said.

NorthPoint CEO Nathaniel Hagedorn said in June that the building would mostly like be used for distribution, manufacturing or warehousing.

YCIDA purchased the 58-acre property at 1445 Eden Road in 2012 to encourage Harley-Davidson to remain in Pennsylvania. The authority agreed to split proceeds of the land’s sale with the company.

Preparing the site for reuse required environmental remediation efforts due to the presence of chemicals used in manufacturing, not just by Harley-Davidson but also by a company that made snowmobiles, golf carts and bowling equipment there in the 1960s and by the U.S. Navy, which used the building as a munitions plant in World War II. Harley-Davidson and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducted the cleanup efforts.

“The West Campus project was an opportunity to take an underutilized site in a strategic location and facilitate the redevelopment resulting in the highest and best use of the site,” YCIDA Chairman Jack Kay said in a news release Tuesday. “It is another example of the commitment and dedication that the YCIDA has to improving the York community and spurring economic growth.”

Larry Lapinski, NorthPoint’s vice president of development, said, “NorthPoint’s investment in York County was premised on the strong transportation and logistics network, along with a strong skilled workforce in the area. From the beginning, we were impressed with the work of the YCIDA and their ability to make this transaction happen.”
