Cannabis Infused Coffee Pods May Be Coming To Canada Soon

Canadians may soon be able to get their medical marijuana fix in a cup of coffee.

A report from CBC reveals that the homegrown company CannTrust has just developed a single serve coffee pod that comes spiked with a "standardized dosage of medical marijuana." Designed for use with single serve coffee makers, the pods will come in either coffee, tea, or hot chocolate flavor.

According to Eater, "pods will be 100 percent compostable and compatible with K-cup style coffee makers like the ever-popular Keurig. Individual cups will retail for between $3 and $4 CAD ($2.25 to $3 USD)."

The announcement comes right on the heels of the Canadian Supreme Court's expansion of the existing medical marijuana law in June. Previously, medical marijuana patients were limited to smoking the dried product; however under the new ruling they can now consume the drug.

Still, the country's department of health is still debating whether or not to extend the law even further to cover cannabis-laced edibles and beverages.

CANNTrust is confident that the government will go ahead with the ruling. Last month the company said in a statement:

"The Supreme Court of Canada has made the decision that cannabis is acceptable in all forms and it should be up to the patient how they choose to use it," says Eric Paul, Pharmacist and CEO of CannTrust Inc. "They have said, in effect, that if users would rather drink their medical marijuana than smoke it, they have the right to do so. Our focus has always been on the treatment and therapeutic value of cannabis, and CANNCUPTM pods were developed in the spirit of this new ruling. We look forward to Health Canada approval so we can bring this effective treatment alternative to Canadians in need."
