New freeway lanes to open Monday

The Texas Department of Transportation is scheduled to open new lanes of traffic to drivers along Marsha Sharp Freeway next week as crews continue to work on Phase 5A of the project, according to a news release.

"Starting Monday, crews will begin the process of opening the east- and westbound main lanes on the (Marsha Sharp Freeway) bridge and the Spur 327 bridge, spanning over Milwaukee Avenue," said Will Barnett, TxDOT Lubbock Area engineer, in a news release. "The eastbound Frankford Avenue exit on Spur 327 is also scheduled to open. The process to get the bridges and exit open to traffic will take several days to complete and will continue throughout the week."

Barnett said work at the intersection of the freeway and Milwaukee Avenue and westbound frontage roads is expected to continue next week, weather permitting.

The $22.4 million project is expected to be completed later this year.

"Traffic will be shifted onto the eastern half of Milwaukee-with two-lanes in each direction. The new Milwaukee traffic conditions will allow crews to safely work to rebuild the intersection." Barnett said. "Milwaukee Avenue drivers should expect delays and are advised to seek alternate routes."

The westbound frontage road of the freeway will also be reduced to one lane west of Milwaukee in order to construct the remainder of the new frontage road, the news release states. "Traffic approaching Milwaukee will be reduced to one left-turn only lane, one thru-lane and one right-turn only lane."
