Cr Doukas’ comments come after the incident where a driver travelling north along Conns Lane failed to give way to a tip truck heading west on Tower Hill Road.
Cr Doukas said crests on the south and west sides of the intersection created poor visibility and improved signage wasn’t the answer.
“No matter how many signs you put there, the visibility is still poor. It needs better visibility,” Cr Doukas said
He said the roads weren’t wide enough.
Cr Doukas said trucks turning left had to go over the centre white line and onto the right hand side of the road in order to turn.
“It should be widened so they can get around without crossing the middle line,” he said.
“I would like to see the intersection widened and that would make for better visibility and easier turning. Then if you do see another oncoming vehicle there’s enough room to get out of the way.”
Moyne Shire mayor Colin Ryan said the intersection on top of the hill was in a bad location and also said the visibility was poor.
“It’s a bad intersection and people need to keep their wits about them on country roads,” Cr Ryan said.
He encouraged motorists to drive safely and not be statistics in the lead up to the festive season.
“Christmas isn’t far away. We’ve had a bad run of accidents in the region in the last couple of months. Let’s all be here for Christmas.”
Koroit police Senior Constable Suzanne Forster urged drivers to use caution.
“Slow down and have a good look, regardless of who’s got the right of way,” she said.
Senior Constable Forster said despite following the road rules, the unexpected could still happen to drivers.
“Cross roads are all over the countryside. Regardless of who’s got right of way, you give way.”
