BREAKING: Alamo Home Damaged During Early Morning Fire

"In this case, the smoke alarm is responsible for saving this person's life," the Fire Protection District Capt. George Laing.

A one-alarm fire heavily damaged a home in Alamo early this morning, a fire captain said. Around 1:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire happening near the corner of Crest and Hillgrade avenues, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Capt. George Laing. When firefighters arrived, they saw black smoke coming from the residence, Laing said.

The single occupant inside the home was asleep at the time of the fire, according to Laing. The victim woke up when she heard the home’s smoke alarm sounding. She tried to call 911, but her phone wasn’t working, Laing said. The victim was ultimately able to escape through a back door, wearing only pajamas, according to Laing. The fairly large house sustained major damage as a result of the blaze, Laing said.

The home had recently undergone some renovations because the owners had recently put the home up for sale, according to Laing. The fire rekindled throughout the morning and firefighters had to return three times, Laing said.

“This house was adjacent to wildland and could have easily spread had it not been for a quick and aggressive response by firefighters,” Laing said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Laing said the fire should serve as a reminder to residents to test their home smoke detectors every month.
