GRANITE CITY, IL — Many workers at the US Steel plant in Granite City were issued a notice on Tuesday about possible consolidation. Notices were issued to 2,000 employees at the Granite City Works under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

The United States Steel Corporation is examining consolidation of its North American Flat-Rolled operations. This may temporarily idle operations at the Granite City plant.

The company says they, “routinely adjusts production at its operating facilities to reflect market fluctuations. The potential consolidation is a result of continued challenging global market conditions including fluctuating oil prices, reduced rig counts, depressed steel prices and unfairly traded imports.”

The notices issued on October 6th to Granite City employees are separate from previously issued notices.
