Challengers defeat incumbents in Monroe GOP primary

MONROE – Michael A. McGinn and Anthony P. Cardone III were the apparent winners in Thursday’s Republican primary for town councilman.

With almost 94 percent of the votes counted, McGinn had 1,312 votes and Cardone had 1,346 votes. Incumbent Councilman Dennis C. McWatters received 137 votes, and there were seven write-in votes.

In the Republican primary for superintendent of highways, John M. Karl III appeared to have defeated incumbent Anthony S. Rizzo. With almost 94 percent of the ballots counted, Karl had 703 votes and Rizzo had 596 votes. There were two write-in votes.
