Serena Williams has definitely got over losing out on this year's US Open title and the "calendar slam" - but now she's much more upset about her dog, Jackie.

The tennis star's been posting pictures of her pet after the 16-year-old Jack Russell Terrier died this week.

"We will never forget u. Thank you for the kindness and joy you brought us," Serena wrote on Instagram.

Nearly 50,000 fans have "liked" her loving tribute to Jackie.

Serena described Jackie as a "special friend" and "my angel".

He had been at her side since she was 17, just two weeks before she won her first grand slam title at the US Open in 1999.

"I got out of the shower this afternoon and she was not there to lick my leg as she always did everyday to remind me how much she loved me," she told fans.

"Give your dog, cat, pet a big hug."

Luckily Serena's got another cute terrier in her life called Chip, who's been spotted courtside at matches.

Tennis players seem to love their dogs more than most, despite spending so much time on tour - and terriers seem to be popular.

Andy Murray is a famous dog lover - his Border Terrier Maggie Mayhem even has her own Twitter account.
