South African tennis player Joshua Chetty has been banned for life from the sport after being found guilty of attempted match-fixing.

The 21-year-old admitted offering another player financial incentives to under-perform in matches during the ITF Futures event in Stellenbosch, South Africa last November.

The approached player - who has not been named - referred the matter to the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), whose findings led to the lifetime ban following an independent anti-corruption hearing.

The TIU said in a statement announcing Chetty's punishment: 'The lifetime ban from all professional tennis applies with immediate effect and means the player is not allowed to compete in, or attend, any tournament or event organised or sanctioned by the governing bodies of the sport.'

Chetty is currently ranked 1,857 in the world having reached a career high of 1,370 in June last year.

He joins a growing list of players issued life bans following referral to the Tennis Integrity Unit, including Daniel Kollerer, David Savic, Andrey Kumantsov and Alexandros Jakupovic.
