With Simon Mignolet underperforming, here are three English goalkeepers Liverpool should look at in January.
Liverpool have endured a fairly solid start to the season under Jurgen Klopp, sitting in 5th place after 11 Premier League games, but regular defensive relapses and goalkeeping errors have cost The Reds in key games.
In their opening 11 league games, Liverpool have leaked 17 goals, more than 19th placed Swansea, with fans regularly raising their concerns over the state of the defence, including Belgian keeper Simon Mignolet.
The 29-year-old has failed to live up to expectations during his career at Anfield and with doubts also surrounding Loris Karius, a new keeper could be a target in January. Here are three English keepers Jurgen Klopp should consider in January.
Nick Pope
Replacing the injured Tom Heaton in goal for Burnley, Pope has been one of this season’s breakthroughs, starting seven of Burnley’s league games this term.
With six clean sheets already this term, Pope is starting to make a name for himself and will be looking to make a late challenge for the England squad with a strong second half to the season. With Mignolet underperforming, the 25-year-old former Charlton stopper could be the perfect competition.
Fraser Forster
The former Celtic stopper has established himself as one of England’s best keepers in recent years thanks to a solid stint at Southampton and could be due a move to a larger club and judging by Liverpool’s past transfer dealings with the South coast side, this move could be a realistic possibility.
Despite only notching up three clean sheets in all competitions this term, Forster has bailed Southampton out on several occasions and standing at 6 feet 6 inches tall, Forster could be the solution to Mignolet’s uncertainty from set pieces, which has cost Liverpool on several occasions this term.
Jack Butland
Many expected Butland to make a move earlier in his career, but the former Birmingham City keeper has stuck with Stoke City and is reaping the rewards. With Joe Hart struggling at West Ham, the 24-year-old looks like England’s best bet for the World Cup next summer and could be set for his big move.
Butland has been tipped for big things from a young age, but injuries have hampered his playing time in recent seasons, making just five appearances for The Potters last season due to a serious injury. However, Butland seems to be making up for lost time now and his excellent shot-stopping abilities and athleticism could attract interest from The Reds.
