6.9 magnitude earthquake hits Gulf of California

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Gulf of California off Mexico's western coast Thursday, according the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake, centered in the Gulf of California at 10:53am PST, was at a depth of 6.2 miles, and located 85 miles northeast of La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

It was the third quake felt in the Mexican state of Sinaloa in the past 24 hours. On Wednesday evening, a less intense earthquake, registering between 4.7 and 5.9 on the Richter scale rocked the San Andreas fault.

Following Thursday’s more powerful shaker, public buildings in the towns of Culiacan, Guasave and Los Mochis were evacuated, according to the newspaper, Noroeste de Culiacan.

There have been no reports of injuries or property damage.
