Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist heaped praise on President Obama Sunday morning, arguing that Obamacare has been “great” for the state, despite its difficult rollout.
“I think it’s been great. The roll-out was difficult. I’m sure the president feels that way, too,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the Orlando Sentinel reported.
“I know that he has a compassionate heart, he cares about people,” Mr. Crist said. “People getting health care is like a civil right.”
“This president is leading and leading well,” he said, adding, “The president is a smart guy, and he’s doing the right thing and God bless him for it.”
Mr. Crist was a Republican when he was governor but he is running as a Democrat against Gov. Rick Scott after a short stint as an Independent. He described the GOP as fractured and unsure of what it wants to do.
“It’s sad,” he said.
Mr. Crist acknowledged Florida’s economy had improved under Mr. Scott’s leadership but said “it could be doing a lot better,” the Associated Press reported.
He argued that Florida had been hurt by the state’s refusal to expand Medicaid eligibility and Mr. Scott’s decision to reject federal money for high-speed rail.
