What athletes eat: Lindsay Whalen's pre-workout power meal

During her 14 seasons in the WNBA, Lindsay Whalen has established herself as one of the best to ever play the game. Last year, the Minnesota Lynx guard added to her lengthy list of achievements by becoming the first player ever to tally 5,000 points, 2,000 assists and 1,500 rebounds.

But 2017 hasn't been without its bumps. A broken bone in Whalen's left hand required surgery and took her out of play for the last 12 games of the regular season.

Now she's back, hoping to help the No. 1-seeded Lynx win a fourth WNBA title -- a title that the team just missed out on last year to the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sparks and Lynx will meet again this year when the Finals kick off on Sunday.

Throughout her career, the 35-year-old Minnesota native has fine-tuned her nutrition, right along with her game. One of her favorite pre-workout recipes usually happens to be for breakfast -- but she also uses it as fuel any time of the day:

Day and time: Before a game or a workout

Place: At home in the Twin Cities

What I'm eating: Scrambled eggs with red peppers, green peppers and tomatoes, plus oatmeal made with 100 percent whole-grain, old-fashioned oats and dried fruit.

Why I'm eating it: I love eggs, so it was easy to mix in some peppers and tomatoes for a well-rounded, healthy meal. The veggies definitely aren't my favorite part, but if done right, they can be tasty! As for the oatmeal, the whole-grain oats provide a great source of energy, and the dried fruit adds a little sweetness.

I also have Newman's Own organic coffee and hazelnut or vanilla organic coffee creamer from Whole Foods. The organic idea is mostly from my trainers. Along with the coffee, I drink a ton of water in the morning to hydrate for my workout or for practice that day.

Whose recipe: My nutritionist suggested the recipe for the oatmeal last offseason. The egg and veggie combo was something I came up with over the years, after hearing how good it is for your body to eat vegetables in the morning.

The recipe:
Ingredients:
Two eggs
One pepper
One tomato
3/4 cup whole-grain, old-fashioned oats
Dried fruit (I like cranberries!)

The recipe is pretty simple. Whisk the eggs together and throw them in a pan over medium heat. Mix in the chopped pepper and tomato, and remove from heat once the scrambled eggs are ready. While the eggs are cooking, add water to your oats and prepare on the stove or in the microwave. Add your dried fruit, grab your organic coffee and you're good to go!
