The USA Network has decided not to renew Ryan Phillippe's Shooter for a fourth season.

The action drama is currently airing its third season on the network, with five episodes left to go.

But it doesn't necessarily have to mean the end of the series, as Deadline reports that the show's producer Paramount Television is 'shopping the series to other networks'.

Deadline adds that the production company's sibling channel, the Paramount Network, would be a logical destination for the series, but conversations appear to have stalled.

Shooter is based on Stephen Hunter's best-selling novel Point of Impact and the 2007 film which starred Mark Wahlberg – who serves as an executive producer on the show.

The series also stars Shantel VanSanten, Cynthia Addai-Robinson and Eddie McClintock.

It follows expert marksman Bob Lee Swagger, who had been in exile, but comes back to action after learning of a plot to kill the President – but things go awry when he ends up being framed for murder.

The series debuted in 2016, but its premiere date was delayed after a spate of real-life mass shootings in the US. Season two also ran into problems after Phillippe broke his leg during filming – leaving the season two episodes short.

The final episode of Shooter on the USA Network will air on September 13.

Shooter airs on the USA Network.
