Greeley Central boys hoops pulls away from Thompson Valley late in Prep Roundup for Jan. 23

Loveland – After three quarters of letting Thompson Valley hang around Tuesday night, Greeley Central used a big fourth quarter to claim a 56-42 conference win.

The Wildcats (4-2 Class 4A Northern Conference, 11-4 overall) trailed by two points entering the final quarter but outscored Thompson Valley 21-5 in the final quarter to get the win.

Jackson Hayslip led Central with 32 points. Spencer Conway dished five assists and Alex Arredondo pulled down eight rebounds.

Platte Valley 74, Liberty Common 33: In Fort Collins, Platte Valley used a stingy defense to come away with a conference win on the road.

The Broncos (3-2 3A Patriot League, 9-4 overall) gave up double-digit points in just one quarter while scoring more than 20 points in two quarters.

Platte Valley got a great effort from Cameron Gentry, who scored 16 points. The Broncos were led by Bryson Becker, who scored 21 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and had 6 assists.

Highland 100, Twin Peaks 65: In Ault, Highland used a big third quarter to turn a close game into a blowout.

The Huskies (4-0 2A Mile High League, 11-1 overall) took a seven-point halftime lead and made it a 31-point lead by the end of the third quarter.

Highland coach Pete Freeman said his team was able to recover after a slow start.

Logan Stewart helped spark that big third quarter with three 3-pointers. Highland was led by Tate Bressire’s 28 points and Koby Anderson’s 21 points and 10-plus rebounds.

Longmont Christian 47, Union Colony 41: In Longmont, Union Colony (1-5 2A Mile High, 2-10) fell just short of a tremendous second-half comeback in a league matchup against Longmont Christian (3-3 2A Mile High, 7-4).

A rough end to the first half and a tough third quarter forced Union Colony to fall behind, but Timberwolves coach Michael Neu was proud of his team’s effort.

Eaton 75, Valley 41: In Eaton, the Reds (4-2 3A Patriot League, 9-6) picked up a dominating league win over Valley (1-4 3A Patriot, 7-7).

Led by 29 points from Scott Grable, Eaton began the game on a 25-7 run and never looked back. A 24-8 run to close the game helped seal the deal for Eaton, as it now has two days off before it’s back in action Friday night at Brush.

University 75, Frontier Academy 74: In Greeley, University (3-2 3A Patriot, 10-4) picked up its 10th win of the season in a gritty victory over Frontier Academy (2-2 3A Patriot, 8-5).

Free-throws down the stretch – especially by freshman Tayt Chacon – helped seal the victory for University in what was a back-and-forth game for all four quarters.

University will be back in action Friday at home against Liberty Common, while Frontier heads to Sterling that same day.

GIRLS HOOPS

Loveland – Greeley Central (6-0 Class 4A Northern League, 14-1) defeated Thompson Valley (5-1 4A Northern, 11-3) 44-33 in a battle of first-place teams.

Something had to give in Loveland and the Wildcats came out on top to keep their perfect record in league alive.

Longmont 47, Northridge 45: In Greeley, Northridge (3-3 4A Northern, 5-10) suffered a two-point loss in a back-and-forth league game against Longmont (5-1 4A Northern, 7-8).

The Grizzlies took a one-point deficit into the final quarter of play but just couldn’t quite pull it out against Longmont. Northridge now has two days off before a bigtime matchup against Greeley Central on Friday night.

Broomfield 67, Greeley West 39: In Greeley, West was unable to solve a tough zone defense and couldn’t dig out of an early hole en route to a loss.

Broomfield’s 1-2-2 zone resulted in a lot of turnovers, which put the Spartans (0-5 5A Front Range League, 5-11 overall) behind in the first half.

West was paced by Juanita Aragon, who scored 20 points.
