Northeast Queens residents unite to clean up a wooded area of a local park.

Volunteers helped the New York City Parks Stewardship team on Tuesday in Bayside. They learned how to identify harmful plants and remove them to improve the health of Little Bay Park.

Organizers say healthy forests are necessary for trees to grow and produce oxygen. Volunteers say there are many reasons why people should take care of forests.

“I think it's very important, because it attracts people to come here,” said Bayside resident Allan Zaretsky. “And it’s good for the kids, good for the environment.'

“We live in a city and people often don't think about those natural areas as precious as they are, in that, if we don't take care of them there is a really good chance we could lose them,” added Matt Symons, the city’s Northeast Queens Parks Administrator.
