Here's a guide to what's on the big screen in the Milwaukee area. It doesn't include listings for movies opening next Friday but holding Thursday night screenings, including "The Secret Life of Pets" and "Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates."

The Angry Birds Movie

PG (rude humor). 97 minutes. Playing: Mayfair Mall.

Why are those angry birds so angry? This animated comedy purports to do some 'splainin'. With voices by Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Kate McKinnon, Maya Rudolph, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, Sean Penn.

Barbershop: The Next Cut

PG-13 (sexual material, language). 112 minutes. Playing: Value Cinema/Oak Creek.

Times have changed for the barbershop — Ice Cube's shop shares space with a women's salon next door — but the neighborhood's problems have only gotten worse, until the shop and its crew take a stand. Third movie in the franchise — No. 2 came out in 2004 — with much of the original cast, including Cedric the Entertainer, Regina Hall, Anthony Anderson and Sean Patrick Thomas, and some new blood, including Nicki Minaj and Common. Directed by Malcolm D. Lee.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice

PG-13 (violence, some sensuality). 153 minutes. Playing: Value Cinema/Oak Creek.

With part of the world turning against Superman over concerns he'll use his power for evil instead of good, Batman decides not to wait for that to happen and takes on the Man of Steel. The latest block in DC Comics' retooled movie universe, both a sequel to 2013's "Man of Steel" and prequel to the anticipated Justice League of America epics. With Henry Cavill returning as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman; with Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane.

The BFG

A girl ignores the warnings about the nasty ogres who snatch people in the middle of the night and befriends a not-so-giant giant, and with him does battle against bigger villains. Steven Spielberg adapts Roald Dahl's children's novel for the screen, with Mark Rylance, who won an Oscar for playing a Soviet spy in Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," as the Big Friendly Giant (via motion-capture). The Boss

R (sexual content, language, brief drug use). 99 minutes. Playing: Value Cinema/Oak Creek.

Melissa McCarthy plays a corporate executive who loses it all after serving time in prison for insider trading, and then stumbles on her way back to riches — using her take-no-prisoners business acumen to help sell girl scout treats. With Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage, Kathy Bates.

Captain America: Civil War

PG-13 (violence). 146 minutes. Playing: Ridge.

After another world-shattering event involving the world's mightiest superheroes, the powers that be set out to put Captain America and his confederates under civilian control. When Cap and some of his friends resist, Iron Man and some of his try to rein them in. The mother of all intramural superhero battles brings back most of the Avengers, including Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Vision (Paul Bettany) and the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), along with the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and some new Marvel characters, including Chadwick Boseman as the Black Panther and Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo ("Captain America: The Winter Soldier").

Central Intelligence

Buddy-action comedy with Kevin Hart as a former big man on campus (now an accountant) joining forces with the school dweeb (now a super-buff CIA agent), played by Dwayne Johnson. With Amy Ryan, Aaron Paul, Danielle Nicolet.

The Conjuring 2

R (terror, violence). 133 minutes. Playing: Hillside, Majestic, Mayfair Mall, Menomonee Falls, Ridge, South Shore, Southgate.

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren go to England and wrestle with the Enfield Poltergeist in this horror sequel. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as the Warrens, as does director James Wan ("Saw," the "Insidious" movies).

The Darkness

PG-13 (mature themes, some violence, brief sensuality, language). 93 minutes. Playing: Value Cinema/Oak Creek.

A family returns from a trip to the Grand Canyon with some unexpected baggage: a supernatural force lurking in one of the rocks their son brought back with him. Horror-thriller with Kevin Bacon, Radha Mitchell, David Mazouz, Lucy Fry, Ming-Na Wen, Jennifer Morrison. Co-produced by the producer of the "Insidious" and "Paranormal Activity" movies.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

PG (language, mild thematic elements). 115 minutes. Playing: Avalon (Tue., Thu. only), Times (Tue., Thu. only).

Steven Spielberg's beloved 1982 fable about an extraterrestrial who, lost on Earth, finds some friends who help get back homeward. Showing at 11 a.m. only Tuesday and Thursday. Admission is $5.

Finding Dory

With Ellen DeGeneres returning as the voice of Dory; other voices by Albert Brooks, Hayden Rolence, Ed O'Neill, Ty Burrell, Idris Elba, Sigourney Weaver. Free State of Jones

During the Civil War, a poor white farmer leads a rebellion in Mississippi against Confederate rule, and, joining forces with other small farmers and local black slaves, declares independence. Based on the incredible-but-true historical tale, with Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell, Mahershala Ali. Written and directed by Gary Ross ("The Hunger Games," "Seabiscuit").

Genius

PG-13 (some thematic elements, suggestive content). 104 minutes. Playing: Downer.

The book editor (Colin Firth) who launched the careers of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway wrestles with the genius of Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law) in this literary biopic. Based on A. Scott Berg's biopic of Max Perkins, with Nicole Kidman, Laura Linney, Guy Pearce, Dominic West.

Independence Day: Resurgence

In the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster, the aliens are back — and both sides have had 20 years to prepare. The original's co-stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner (but not Will Smith) are joined by Jessie T. Usher and Liam Hemsworth. (Showing in 3-D at Majestic, Mayfair Mall, Menomonee Falls, Ridge.)

The Jungle Book

Mowgli the man-cub sets out to find himself in the jungle, with help from Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear. Live-action telling of the Rudyard Kipling story, with Neel Sethi as Mowgli and an all-star voice cast including Bill Murray as Baloo, Idris Elba as the tiger Shere Khan, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa the snake, Christopher Walken as King Louie.

Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company: Romeo and Juliet

Not rated. 165 minutes. Playing:Majestic (Thu. only).

Richard Madden and Lily James play Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers, with Derek Jacobi as Mercutio in a modern take on the romance directed by Kenneth Branagh and Rob Ashford. Filmed live at London's Garrick Theatre; shown in black and white.

The Legend of Tarzan

In the latest reboot of Edgar Rice Burroughs' adventure story, Tarzan, years after having left the jungle for the civilized life in England, is sent back to the Congo, where his special set of skills come back into play. With Alexander Skarsgård as Tarzan, Margot Robbie as Jane; Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou, John Hurt, Jim Broadbent co-star. The Lobster

R (sexual content, some violence). 118 minutes. Playing: Oriental.

In a place where single people have 45 days to find a mate — or face being turned into an animal of their choosing — a newly divorced man seeks love, or at least hope. Yorgos Lanthimos' absurdist, bittersweet comedy stars Colin Farrell as the fella looking for love, and Rachel Weisz as the kindred spirit who might have the answers.

London Has Fallen

R (violence, pervasive language). 99 minutes. Playing: Value Cinema/Oak Creek.

A Secret Service agent who saved the president from a terrorist attack at the White House is back on the case when a different terrorist targets the president — and many of the leaders of the Western world — during a state funeral in London. Gerard Butler (as the agent), Aaron Eckhart (the president), Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett all reprise their roles from the 2013 action hit "Olympus Has Fallen."

Me Before You

PG-13 (thematic elements, some suggestive material). 110 minutes. Playing: Ridge.

A wealthy young quadriplegic looking for a way out finds an unexpected bond with his free-spirited caretaker. Romantic drama based on Jojo Moyes' bestselling novel, with Emilia Clark, Sam Claflin.

Money Monster

R (pervasive language, some sexuality, brief violence). 98 minutes. Playing: Value Cinema/Oak Creek.

George Clooney plays the star of a popular investment TV show who's taken hostage while on the air by a guy whose savings were wiped out by his bad advice — advice, it turns out, that was undermined by something more sinister than market fluctuations. Thriller directed by Jodie Foster, with Julia Roberts, Jack O'Connell, Dominic West.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

R (crude sexual content, brief nudity, pervasive language, drug use). 92 minutes. Playing: Value Cinema/Oak Creek.

Just as a couple with a kid and another on the way are going to sell their house and move to the suburbs, a party-hardy sorority moves in next door, threatening to wreck the neighborhood and kill their deal. Sequel to the raunchy 2014 hit, with Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as the besieged couple, Chloë Grace Moretz as the girl leading the rogue sorority, and Zac Efron reprising his role as the frat leader who turned their world upside down in the first movie.

The Neon Demon

R (disturbing violent content, gore, nudity, sexuality, language). 117 minutes. Playing: Mayfair Mall.

An aspiring model moves to Los Angeles and is soon swept up in the youth- and beauty-obsessed world of fashion where what starts out pretty soon gets very, very ugly. Horror-thriller from director Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive," "Only God Forgives"), with Elle Fanning, Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves.

The Nice Guys

R (violence, sexuality, nudity, language, brief drug use). 116 minutes. Playing: Value Cinema/Oak Creek.

In 1970s L.A., a scuffling private detective (Ryan Gosling) works with an enforcer (Russell Crowe) on a case involving a missing girl, the death of a porn star and a widening conspiracy. Action/buddy comedy directed by Shane Black ("Iron Man 3").

Now You See Me 2

A year after they stunned the world with their ingenious heist, a quartet of magicians calling themselves the Four Horsemen are forced by a tech prodigy to pull off one last job. With Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Lizzy Caplan, batting for the original's Isla Fisher, as the Horsemen, with Daniel Radcliffe as the tech guru, and Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Kenosha native Mark Ruffalo reprising their roles from the 2013 hit.

Our Kind of Traitor

A vacationing English couple befriend a former money man for the Russian mob, but when he asks them to connect him with British intelligence, intrigue ensues. Thriller based on John le Carre's novel, with Ewan McGregor, Naomie Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Damian Lewis.

The Peanuts Movie

G. 89 minutes. The Purge: Election Year

With America still "purging" — for one 12-hour period a year, people can commit any crime, including murder, as a way to let their demons loose — a senator running for president on an anti-"purge" campaign finds herself a target by the sinister folks in power. Third movie in the horror franchise, with Elizabeth Mitchell, Frank Grillo.

Ratchet & Clank

A pair of misfits set out to save their galaxy from an evil villain by trying to join a superhero squad. Animated action fantasy based on a PlayStation game, with voices by David Haye, James Arnold Taylor, Paul Giamatti, Rosario Dawson, Sylvester Stallone.

The Shallows

Thriller with Blake Lively as a woman on a pilgrimage to an isolated beach that is near the feeding ground of a relentless great white shark.

Sultan

Inspirational sports drama about an Indian wrestler, played by Salman Khan, who grapples with adversity en route to the 2012 London Olympics. In Hindi with English subtitles.

Swiss Army Man

A shipwrecked man, literally at the end of his rope, bonds with a dead body that washes up on the beach. Dark, sometimes coarse comedy with Paul Dano as the desperate man, and Daniel Radcliffe as the dead one.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

PG-13 (action violence). 112 minutes. Playing: Mayfair Mall.

The heroes in the half-shell return to take on an evil scientist and his creations in this sequel to the 2014 reboot of the franchise. With Megan Fox, Will Arnett, Stephen Amell, Tyler Perry, Gary Anthony Williams, Stephen "Sheamus" Farrelly.

Zootopia

In a mammal metropolis made up of habitat neighborhoods for every environment, a bunny who's the first of her kind on the city police force is determined to make her mark. Animated Disney comedy with voices by, among others, Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, J.K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer.
