The Top 10 Adventure Stories From TGR in 2017

Over 20 years ago, Teton Gravity Research was founded in the spirit of adventure and exploration. That underlying desire to push beyond perceived boundaries–to ski that untouched line, to send that next face, to live the dream–has colored everything we've done as a company.

In that spirit, we're happy to present to you the top 10 adventure stories we've published in the past year. Between historic firsts from figures like Alex Honnold to an amazing water year in California, 2017 had something for everyone.

How To Asses A Victim in 60 Seconds

Whether you're in the backcountry or inbounds at the resort, you're bound to come up on someone who's taken a spill and needs your help. And while you may not feel equipped to help, you don't need an EMT certification to be an effective first responder.

California Drought Guidelines Continue, Cliff Jumpers Take Advantage of Raging Torrent

Waters are raging at McCloud Falls in Northern California and these daredevils are enjoying the torrent after heavy snowmelt this winter.

But despite the dramatic increase in snowpack this year that has primed the state for epic adventures such as these, regulators extended the emergency drought guidelines and the prohibitions against wasting water will continue. The decision moved forward at the start of the month and will be reassessed later this spring.

Kelly Halpin Is One Badass Athlete

Bike, swim, climb, repeat—that's what Jackson, Wyoming, local Kelly Halpin is all about.

Halpin has a thing for these feats called Picnics. A Picnic is when you bike, swim, and climb your way up a mountain, and then do it all in reverse in one epic and ultra-grueling push.

"I feel like we are on this planet for a short period of time and it's silly to not spend your life pursuing your passions," Halpin says.

This Badass Mom Has a Baby Seat in Her AK Bush Plane

Growing up in remote places like Fairbanks, AK in the early 80s can create some pretty unique individuals. Leighan Falley, badass climber and guide turned mountain pilot, is certainly one of those.

After joining an expedition to climb a remote face of Denali after high school, she decided to devote her life to the mountains. After leaving Alaska for years, Denali itself became such a draw that she could not resist moving back and becoming a guide. Her life was pretty much perfect, until the day she found out a daughter was on the way. Using her best judgment, she decided mountain guiding was no longer a viable future for herself and her new family.

4 Climbers Die In Tragic Everest Weekend

Mt. Everest's summit season is off to a tragic start, as the body of an Indian man was spotted earlier this morning, marking the fourth fatality of the weekend on the world's highest peak. Sherpa rescuers have spotted the body of the missing climber, Ravi Kumar. The body was impossible to retrieve as he'd fallen 650 ft. below his intended route.

First Video of Alex Honnold's Historic El Cap Climb

These hair-raising moments are the first video footage from renowned rock climber Alex Honnold’s ascent of the 3,000-foot wall of El Capitan—without a rope.

The Ultimate Mountain Bike Conversion Van For Under $6,000

We bought Great White the Adventure Van on Craigslist in late 2014, much to the chagrin of pretty much everyone we knew. A 1998 Ford E-250 cargo van previously owned by AT&T and bearing the sticker residue evidence of such. She was perfect. Which is to say, the price was right; she cost $1400. She had high miles (168,000) and the sort of rust you would expect from a 17-year-old vehicle from Ohio.

How To: Hack Your Van Into The Ultimate Camper Van

My Sprinter was a dream to drive, but the living quarters were a problem. Things were always sliding around and it was hard to keep anything organized. I started building a list of features I wanted to put into my van. As the list grew, I realized that I needed to remove everything and start from scratch. I knew coming up with good design was key. I needed a well thought-out space that served multiple functions and had built-in incentives for keeping my stuff orderly. I spent a lot of time prioritizing my needs and thinking about how to most simply address those needs.

These Two Climbers Scaled the Nose of El Cap Naked

Alex Honnold recently climbed El Cap without the assistance of any ropes or safety equipment. This feat of climbing prowess shook the entire world, with everyone from Jared Leto to Chris Burkard congratulating Alex. More recently the pair of Leah Pappajohn (real name) and Jonathan Fleury climbed the Nose of El Cap naked.

Sherpas Rescued Two Climbers Near Summit of Mount Everest, Watch the Crazy Footage

This May, two climbers were found near death descending from the summit of Mt. Everest, eventually leading to a high stakes rescue. After becoming the fourth Pakistani climber to summit the world’s highest peak, Abdul Jabbar Bhatti and his guide Sange Sherpa were rescued by a group of Sherpas including Ang Tshering Lama, a highly experienced climber and owner of Ang's Himalayan Adventures. The two distressed climbers were passed by several other groups on their way to summit, who left supplemental oxygen canisters, but deemed them fit enough to return to camp without help.
