"It is with sadness that I must inform you that Father's resignation coincides with serious questions and concerns that recently have been raised regarding the handling of parish finances," Rev. James F. Checchio wrote in the letter.
The letter goes on to say that Haefner came to Checchio about "his own health problems and financial issues in recent weeks and has expressed his sorrow for his actions and for letting us all down."

During his confession, Haefner reportedly told Checchio that he "needs help" saying he has been "sick," according to tapinto.net.
"Some of my emotional problems have led to compulsive behavior on my part, and the compulsive behavior cost money.’ [Haefner] said, ‘I borrowed money from the parish.’” according to tapinto.net.
Checchio addressed the parish on Monday regarding the allegations and resignation.
Currently authorities are investigating the theft.
"The Somerset County Prosecutor s Office is investigating but can’t provide details since the investigation is active and ongoing," the SCPO stated.
In the meantime, Father Abraham Orpankal will serve as temporary administrator at the roman catholic church to care for the parish and school community.
"I understand the suddenness of this announcement is unsettling for many, and that Father Haefner has been so well respected by you over many years. You are not alone in these feelings, this is heartbreaking to me too," Checchio stated.
