With a 50-12 loss last Friday to Southwest Georgia Academy, the Briarwood Academy Buccaneers football season came to an end in Damascus.
“It wasn’t a 50-13 game. It was 30-6 with seven minutes to go in the game,” said Bo Fleming, Briarwood head coach.
For much of the game, the Bucs challenged the Warriors and Fleming had hoped to regain the advantage in the second half.
The first half was mostly a stalemate.
“We got the ball to start with, fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and they went and scored in two plays,” said Fleming. “We drove all the way down and scored to make it 8-6.”
Neither team scored in the remainder of the first half. Southwest Georgia threatened to score late in the half, but the Briarwood defense held them out of the end zone as time expired.
“They’re a good team and we held them out on the last play from inside the 20 and we felt like we had a chance in the second half,” he said.
The Warriors put two more touchdowns on the board in the third quarter, which ended with them leading 22-6.
“We battled hard the whole second half. It was 30-6 with seven minutes to go and they put it on us. We fumbled twice inside the 20 on back-to -back possessions and they ended up scoring,” Fleming explained.
Briarwood’s only touchdowns on the night both came from Dax Reese. One was in the opening minutes of the game and the second was on the final play of the night.
Reese rushed for 145 yards from 21 attempts. Evan Moore carried eight times for 46 yards and Dawson Jones rushed seven times for 22 yards. Thomas Wilkerson and Jackson Driver each had a few rushing attempts as well.
The Bucs completed just two of only five passing attempts for a total of 10 yards. Jones had one catch and Jacob Petrie, the other.
Moore led in tackles with 10.
The Bucs wrapped the season up with a 4-6 record overall, 2-2 in region action. This year, the Bucs were a young team after graduating a large number of seniors last year.
“For us to lose as many guys as we did, I felt like our kids were very successful the first half of the season and the second half, we ran into really good teams,” said Fleming. “I feel like it was a good year for our kids. I’m excited about our opportunities going forward.”
The Briarwood coach said he couldn’t be more proud of his seniors and how they have led the team this year.
