New York Mets place Johan Santana on disabled list with ankle injury

Johan SantanaNew York Mets starting pitcher Johan Santana (57) throws against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first inning of a game Friday at Citi Field in New York.

Johan Santana has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right ankle, the latest setback for the fading New York Mets since the All-Star break.

The left-hander has struggled mightily since Reed Johnson of the Chicago Cubs stepped on his ankle July 6 on a play at first base. The Mets decided today to put their ace on the DL so his ankle can fully heal and he can also rest his surgically repaired left shoulder.

Santana is 0-3 with a 13.50 ERA in his last three outings, the worst stretch of his stellar career.
