Tired Of Junk Mail? CA Lawmaker Is Proposing To Get Rid Of It

Assemblyman Marc Steinorth (R-Rancho Cucamonga) is proposing to get rid of unwanted mail.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA -- Are you tired of your mailbox overflowing with junk mail? Tired of the random coupons, advertisements and gimmicks? You're not alone. A California lawmaker this month proposed a bill that would eliminate unwanted mail.

Assemblyman Marc Steinorth (R-Rancho Cucamonga) proposed Assembly Bill 2021, which would create a state version of the Do Not Call List.

“It is time California takes responsibility for the privacy of our residents,” said Steinorth, who represents parts of the Inland Empire. “AB 2021 will create the California Do Not Contact List, allowing California residents to include their phone number and mail address on the list of consumers that solicitors may not contact without prior permission.”

AB 2021 will create a statewide list of consumers that solicitors are prohibited from calling or mailing to without their prior permission or business relationship. The California Attorney General will receive complaints, and investigate and enforce violations, Steinorth's office said in a press release.

“Californians are completely at the mercy of these telemarketers who get their hands on personal addresses and phone numbers," Steinorth said. "These days, you can hardly get through a meal or finish texting your kids without being interrupted."

Steinorth's office said more than 25 million Californians are currently registered on the national Do Not Call List but the residents still filed 750,000 complaints in 2016. The program does not address snail mail.
