Veterans Day 2018 ceremonies, parade, events

Harrison: Veterans parade at 10:00 a.m. starting on Underhill Avenue.

Haverstraw: Rockland County will unveil the Gulf War/War on Terror monument at noon at Haverstraw Bay Park, 21 Gagan Road, Haverstraw. Contact Rockland County Veterans Services office, 845-638-5244.

Newburgh: The Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, Liberty and Washington streets, will have a craft workshop 11 a.m.-3 p.m. to make your own Badge of Military Merit. Washington created the badge in 1782 during the last days of the Revolutionary War while at his headquarters in Newburgh. This was the first award to honor enlisted personnel and evolved into the Purple Heart. Craft included in museum admission. 845-562-1195.

Rye: The Friends of the African American Cemetery will have a ceremony 10 a.m. at the site located adjacent to the Greenwood Union Cemetery, 215 North St. Following the ceremony, volunteers will help clean the headstones. Contact David Thomas, 914-886-5710 or email afamcemetery@gmail.com.

Croton-on-Hudson: The Devotion Yoga Studio, 2055 Albany Post Road, will have a donation-based yoga class at noon. Proceeds benefit the Veterans Yoga Project, a charitable organization that supports recovery programs for veterans and their families. 914-930-7707.

Garnerville: A ceremony for fallen veterans will be held 11 a.m. at Calico Hill Veterans Memorial Cemetery, West Railroad Avenue and Andrews Drive. Guest speaker Stephen Cobb will talk about the history of the 100th anniversary of WWI. Contact Rockland County Veterans Services Office, 845-638-5244. 

Mamaroneck: American Legion Post No. 90 will have a ceremony 11 a.m. at the memorial site across from the post at 189 Prospect Ave., Mamaroneck. Ceremony followed by refreshments. Contact Bill Goodenough, commander, 914-341-1034. 

New Rochelle: Ceremony will be held at 10:15 a.m. at the World War I Monument in Faneuil Park, corner of East Main Street & Huguenot Street. The ceremony will commemorate the end of the Great War and New Rochelle’s contribution, along with those of the generations of men and women from New Rochelle who have answered, and continue to answer the call to duty. Orangeburg: The Raymond W. DeMeola VFW Post No. 1615 of Blauvelt will have a ceremony 10 a.m. at the Walkway of Heroes, Independence Avenue and Lowe Lane. 

Suffern: Mayor Ed Markunas and the village will host the Fromm Maxwell-DeBaun American Legion Post No. 859 at the annual parade and ceremony. Parade starts at 2:30 p.m. at Suffern Village Hall, 61 Washington Ave., and proceeds to Soldier’s Monument where the ceremony begins at 3 p.m. The 42nd Infantry Division Band will participate in the ceremony. New City: The Rockland County Veterans Coordinating Council (RCVCC) will present the Veteran of the Year Award to honor Col. John Leighton of the Vietnam Veterans of America No. 333. The event will be held at noon at the Rockland County Courthouse steps in New City. Contact RCVCC Secretary Jeromy Honey, 845-596-4089.

Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow: Services will be held 10:30 a.m. at Patriots Park War Memorial, Route 9, on the border of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. 914-366-5109.

White Plains: The city's ceremony will be held 10:30 a.m. on the front steps of City Hall, 255 Main St. The event is organized by the Mayor’s Veterans Committee. Refreshments will be served inside City Hall following the ceremony. Flags representing each branch of the Armed Forces will be displayed in the City Hall Rotunda. Yonkers: The city will have a ceremony 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Plaza, 40 South Broadway. The Empire VFW Post No. 375 will have a ceremony 2 p.m. at 10 Huber Place. yonkersny.gov

Yorktown: The Yorktown Veterans Day Parade will begin 2 p.m. at Lakeland High School and make its way to to J. C. Hart Library in  Shrub Oak. The event will feature U.S. Army veteran Andrew Amenn of the 10th Mountain Division, who did two tours in Iraq, and an invocation/benediction by Msgr. Joseph Giandurco of St. Patrick's in Yorktown.
