Carpenter, Operating Engineer Unions Recruiting 27 Apprentices

NEW CITY, NY — The Operating Engineers will soon start a short recruitment drive for 25 stationary engineer apprentices in Local Union No. 30. Meanwhile, the Northeast Carpenters union is about to start a yearlong recruitment drive for two cabinetmaker apprentices in New York.

These apprentice programs are registered with the Department of Labor. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.

The Operating Engineers, Local Union #30, will conduct a recruitment Jan. 22 through Feb. 2, 2018 for 25 stationary engineer apprentices.

Applications can be obtained at Local Union #30, 16-16 Whitestone Expressway, Whitestone, NY between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications must be returned via U.S. Postal Service certified mail and postmarked no later than Feb. 16, 2018.

The Local will administer a comprehensive math exam to all applicants who successfully file an application. The highest scoring 50 applicants on the comprehensive math exam will be offered the opportunity to take the Specific Aptitude Test Battery (SATB) administered by the New York State Department of Labor. Dates for all testing will be provided after applications are received. A score of less than 85 percent on the math exam will disqualify the applicant from entry into the program.

In addition the apprenticeship committee requires that applicants for the operating engineer apprenticeships:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Be legally able to work in the United States.
  • Sign a statement indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of a stationary engineer, which includes:
    • Climbing and working off of stairs and ladders.
    • Working in confined and dark spaces.
    • Prolonged standing.
    • Reading small numbers and/or markings.
    • Communicating in loud working conditions.
    • Working in environments that could cause exposure to dust, chemical odors, and hazardous materials.
    • Working in extreme temperatures.
    • Working and/or walking on slippery surfaces.
    • Wearing personal protective equipment, such as respirators, ear protectors, and face shields.
    • Lifting heavy objects weighing up to 60 lbs.
  • Provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Be willing to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Participate in an interview, if selected.
  • Have a valid driver’s license to operate company vehicles.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.

Then, starting Jan. 29, the carpenters union will begin taking applications for two cabinetmaker apprentices.

In the Hudson Valley, applications can be obtained from 1 - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Northeast Carpenters Training Center, 52 Stone Castle Road, Rock Tavern, NY.

Applicants should be prepared to take a math and measurement computation test at the time of application. Applicants must bring their driver’s license or other state-issued ID card, at time of application, to verify residency. Applications must be received no later than Jan. 25, 2019.

The Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC).
  • Sign a statement indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of a Cabinetmaker, which includes:
    • Performing constant repetitive motions.
    • Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time.
    • Working in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
    • Lifting and carrying objects over 50 lbs.
    • Using stationary tools, portable hand tools, and power tools.
    • Climbing and working from heights of at least 10 feet.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.
  • Live within the geographical jurisdiction of the Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee for at least 6 months, which includes the counties of Albany, Allegany, Broome, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Chautauqua, Chemung, Chenango, Clinton, Columbia, Columbia, Cortland, Delaware, Dutchess, Erie, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Genesee, Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Livingston, Madison, Monroe, Montgomery, Nassau, Niagara, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Orange, Orleans, Oswego, Otsego, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Schuyler, Seneca, St. Lawrence, Steuben, Suffolk, Sullivan, Tioga, Tompkins, Ulster, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Westchester, Wyoming, Yates.
  • Provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture. If an applicant tests positive, they cannot reapply for one year.
  • Participate in an interview, if selected.
  • Be willing and able to attend related instruction at a Northeast Carpenters Training Center for four one-week periods, during each of the four years of apprenticeship.
