Michigan woman killed in Upper Peninsula crash

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

According to the Michigan State Police Sault Ste. Marie Post, the incident occurred when 57-year-old Michael Dee Steel, of Detour Village, attempted to turn into a gas station near the intersection of M129 and M80 in Chippewa County's Pickford Township around 5:45 a.m. on Sept. 11.

As the turn was being made, the vehicle was struck by a car driven by 24-year-old Cody James Hoornstra of Brimley. Upon arriving at the scene, authorities found Steel's wife, 57-year-old Suzette Lynn Steel, also of Detour Village, unresponsive and not breathing.

Rescue personnel immediately began lifesaving measures, according to police. Steel was then transported to the War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie by EMS where she was pronounced dead.

The drivers of both vehicles were also transported to War Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released.

The crash is currently under investigation. The MSP were assisted at the scene by the Pickford Fire Department, Pickford EMS, Kinross EMS, and Sault Ste. Marie EMS.
